Late Winter 2018 | 25 Moose River Rock Dodgers lost a long time member, Dale Somerville. Dale was 88 years old but didn’t let his age stop him from snowmobiling. Dale loved snowmobiling. After tractor pulling season was over, he couldn’t wait for the first snow so he could get the snowmobiles out. He had two sleds so if someone came to visit he could take them out for a ride. Dale got us a number of new members this way because they were bitten by the snowmobile bug. Dale was a very active member of our club. He helped with construction projects and, when it got too hard for him to physically help, he would help by hauling lumber for bridge projects or move equipment from project to project with his 18-wheeler truck and trailer. He never would take a dime. I remember one time when the club was rebuilding a bridge that was a ways from the road. Dale parked the truck and trailer beside the road as close to the project as possible and Dale, my dad and I carried the lumber by hand one plank at a time into the bridge site. Dale and my dad also worked with the landowners in the community that we live in so they could get to VAST trails without using the roads. They worked on these trails themselves. Cutting brush, making small bridges or whatever needed to be done. Dale groomed these trails with his sled pulling a homemade drag. Dale was always the leader when he and my dad would go snowmobiling. Sometimes a group would go or just the two of them. Their ride destination was to go someplace for lunch and back. Whenever it was possible, Dale brought them home on a different trail. The club is going to dedicate a trail in Dale’s honor. We have chosen our 18F3 trail the from EX 44 to MooseLook Restaurant. His death has left a big hole in our club and the whole snowmobiling community. Remembering DALE SOMERVILLE By Deb Bunnell In Memory
