Early Winter 2018 | 39 Club News Barnard Mountainviewers We have good news and bad news to report. Our good news is that we have upgraded to a 2005 Tucker 2000 after our old one served us well for many years. The trail closure of an integral part of our trail system is never good news. VAST Corridor 56 from Barnard to Pomfret is now closed due to a landowner revoking permission for trail access at the end of Gully Road behind Suicide Six ski area in Pomfret. Our club is working on alternative routes but there is no foreseeable option for this season. We all know how this story goes - an unhappy landowner starts the domino effect, which affects not just riders and people who understand and support our sport, but also others who support us, such as the general stores and gas stations along our trail system. They support us by providing gas, hot food, and supplies, and we in turn help keep their books in the black. Our industry - and it is a big industry – would do well to saturate the market with a campaign that informs a wide range of stakeholders about the economic impact that snowmobiling has on the state of Vermont. It’s not all about the joy of riding. Whenever our club president talks about that, people seem surprised: “Really?” VAST has done an impressive job in advocating for safety and the importance of respecting landowners for the privileges they provide...Let’s all do more to educate the public about the huge economic boost that snowmobiling provides to Vermont’s economy and what a trail closure can do to a local economy. Our club will continue to provide trail access for local Pomfret riders by grooming WR28 south as far as the Lewis field, but there will be no trail continuity from WR28 to WR30. If you want to get news or photos on our website, please email Rachel Noyes WINDSOR COUNTY at rachel.noyes91@gmail.com. TMAs are available at Mills Hardware and Locust Creek Outfitters in Bethel and through the VAST website. Happy and safe holidays to all - and let’s get out there! In October, a collapsed culvert on Corridor 12 north of WR44 was replaced with a 24’ bridge thanks to the efforts of Cam Burkhardt, Glenn Fagan, Joe Marini, Karen Nardella, Tim Rowe, and Russ Walsh. This group installed the bridge deck and corner posts in a record 3.5 hrs. Special thanks to George Petruney and Karen Nardella for allowing us to access the trail via their property. In early November, Cam Burkhardt, Fred Burkhardt, Glenn Fagan, Tim Rowe, and Russ and Jean Walsh braved mud, wind, and snow squalls to remove fallen trees and cut back overgrown portions of trail near Colby Pond while Joe Marini and Dan Tiernan focused on cutting in a reroute of Corridor 12 in the area of WR43 and our Cook Shack. Club members have worked with the landowner since last winter to get this portion of the trail off Chapman Road. Permission has been granted for one year and will only be extended if there are no issues. Please follow the signs and stay on the groomed trail. Thank you to Jeff Stearns for his help in transporting equipment for the Corridor 12 projects, and thank you to Chef Jared for providing lunch for our volunteers. Unfortunately, the section of Corridor 106 between WR68 and S 14 is closed for this year. Signs with maps will be installed at both intersections and at our Cook Shack. Discussions have begun on a reroute for next season. Please stay on the trail and follow
