Nothing can match the reliability of a good old fashioned map and compass when you’re out on the trails. When you’re planning your ride, VAST’s digital maps can’t be beat. There are also ways to bring the digital map out on the trail with you. With input from our clubs, the VAST trail map is constantly being updated. Every week it gets a little more accurate, and clubs can post conditions as often as they want. There are two places to view the digital map: on the web at vtvast.org/trails and on iPhone and Android using the Vermont Snowmobile Trails app. Both tools access the same data, but they look a little different and each has unique features. App & Web - Conditions layer updated by the clubs showing open/ closed trails and caution notes. Click/tap the trail to see how recently it was updated. - Frequently updated VAST trail layer with intersection numbers, route numbers and information about which clubs manage and groom the trail. - Markers for businesses and services near the trail. - Options for the basemap layer to keep yourself oriented (under “settings” in app). Web Only - Route planning: This feature uses our GIS data to show you the shortest trail route between points as you click on the map. You can make a route and save it, or load a public route. Once a route has been saved you can also export it to use in apps or devices. - Snow depth: This link takes you to a National Weather Service map showing estimated snow depth across the region. - Turn individual types of businesses and services on and off. - Trail color indicates type (corridor, 4-foot corridor, secondary) - Click on trails for segment length and club information. - Other helpful tools, such as measure distance, display by elevation and print options. App Only - Downloads the trail layer to your device so it retains some function even when you don’t have cell service. - Tap the target in top right to center the map on your location (turn on GPS in the app settings). - Turn on “trail markers” to see route type and club info. - Use the Route feature to set a breadcrumb track of your ride and save it for later. Saved routes can be exported. - Mark up the map with your own waypoints. by Ken Brown, VAST Trails & LVRT Project Manager Other Ways - Print map: Folded maps printed on waterproof material are available from your club or to order on the VAST website. A large version to hang on the wall is also available. - SD card: We have pre-loaded microSD cards for Garmin GPS devices available through the website. This layer isn’t updated as often as the web map, but it is a great reliable way to view your location out on the trails. Even with all the data and updates, make sure to pay attention to signs and conditions on the ground. Not every trail is accurate, and not every club has a tech-savvy person available to make instant changes. You can always check club social media for additional information.
