The most popular communication device today is the smartphone. It combines the capabilities of a phone, computer and even a pocket camera for taking stunning winter pictures. There are numerous apps that apply to snowmobilers. This includes weather monitoring and even tracking apps which can spot your location on a map and share it with another individual for accountability. Of course, your smartphone is not complete unless you are monitoring your location with the feature-rich VAST trails app. It is packed with selectable trail information, conditions and trailside business locations. You can read about all the great things you can do with the app in this issue of the magazine on page 26. Exercise caution when using your smartphone on the trails. Most apps are coupled with power and data requirements which can drain your battery. You can disable your data in your cellphone settings which will help preserve your battery strength. However, this can also disable some app functions. Remember: the use of technology does not have to replace successful practices of the past. Rather, advocate that combining technology with your previous solutions will lead to better outcomes. Always take the time to share your experiences and suggestions with others.
