Jen Baker, Secretary northwestriders.org Like us on Facebook GRAND ISLE COUNTY Alburg Sno Springers After a busy fall of prepping and signing trails, the riding season got off to a shaky start. While we had rideable snow for opening day, it was marginal to get the groomers out. In an unprecedented action, vandals destroyed over 30 trail signs, including the GI 2 intersection sign. Off-trail riding in a sensitive area caused us to close the west loop which goes through the village, and circles around 6 miles back to the rail trail. As of this writing, it is unclear whether it will be open at all this year. We held a Christmas Potluck on Dec. 11 at Dave and Summer Ladd’s in North Hero. There was plenty of delectable food and drink, great camaraderie and two very special guests, Cindy Locke and Carmin Lemery, who came all the way from Stowe to join us! Most of the snow after the first few storms has been east of us. Let’s all do the snow dances, and support Fish and Game and the Grand Isle Sheriff’s Dept. in their efforts on our behalf in the hope that we can get our trails open again. Dave Ladd, President Like us on Facebook LAMOILLE COUNTY Smugglers’ Notch Snowmobile Club Winter has arrived. Well, I should say it’s technically winter although we have not seen the snow so far that really makes it feel like winter. We did luck out and receive a few small snowstorms, which allowed us to get out during the last couple weeks of December and open up a couple of our trails. Unfortunately, a few warm and rainy days destroyed the base on all of our lower elevation trails. Hopefully, by the time this article is being read, we will have received lots of snow. Although we haven’t seen a bunch of snow, our members still have been plenty busy working behind the scenes. Lots of small projects were accomplished in December to help continue making our trails better and better. One of the projects was installing new intersection signs at the LE 32 intersection in Jeffersonville. LE 32 is a four-way intersection where trails 104 N, 108 S, 108 N, and 136 meet. For those of you avid riders, you maybe scratching your head because this is the first time you’ve heard of Corridor 136. All that work our volunteers did during the hot and sunny summer days, hand-cutting brush back on the old railroad bed that spans from Jeffersonville to Sheldon is now officially up and running thanks to not only our volunteers, but also to the many volunteers from a few other Franklin county snowmobile clubs. Corridor 136 starts at LE 32 and continues north about 18 or so miles into Sheldon. It is a great addition to the wonderful VAST trail system and a great connector trail between Lamoille and Franklin counties. I seriously cannot wait to get the opportunity to ride my sled on it. Our Tucker 2000 received some new lighting in December. We removed the four halogen lights near the top of the windshield and replaced it with a fancy LED spot/flood light. As we all know, LEDs are incredibly bright and should help with visibility during our night grooming operations. Speaking of grooming, I want to give a shout out to our grooming operators who volunteer their time, day and night, to keep our trails in tip-top condition. Our operators this year are Terry Carpenter, Dustin Turner and Mike Spaulding. If you pass them on the trail, slow down, yield to them and give them a thumbs up! The Smugglers Notch Snowmobile Club meets the last Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m. at Smugglers’Notch Snowmobile Club has new LE 32 Intersections signs.
