Rollers come in very handy as you work your trail system, getting ready to bring out the drag to lay down white asphalt. Some of the bridges you cross on the trail system have been designed using materials such as tractor-trailer beds and telephone poles that have already served their purpose. Compared to purchasing a Bailey bridge structure, being creative with an alternate foundation can save some serious money while repurposing material that might be readily available. Another way that a club can save themselves and VAST some dollars, is by maintaining and utilizing equipment beyond the length of any equipment grants. Regular care and maintenance of groomers can extend their value beyond a five-year grant. Replacing wear-and-tear parts can help add longevity to the vehicle, retain a higher trade-in value and allow you to go a few extra years before upgrading and entering into a new grant contract. This could also allow you a few extra years to raise money toward that next purchase while freeing up grant money for another club that might be in more need of an upgrade at that time. Like the landowners, local businesses can’t be thanked enough for what they do for our recreational activity. There are countless opportunities for us to work with them as they lend a hand helping towards our efforts. Bartering for services is a great way to create a partnership. I’ve seen clubs trade trail sponsorship for gift certificates or credits on accounts which can be used for fundraisers or to offset purchasing materials. If you need a new windshield for a groomer and you have a local glass shop that rides, why not trade a couple TMAs for the cut piece of glass? Do you have a local restaurant where you hold your club meeting? Why not work with them to accommodate your landowner appreciation gift certificates or thank you dinner? Is there a local business on your trail network? Why not work with them as a TMA outlet to help give back to them via foot and Trading trail sponsorship for fundraiser prizes or services your club needs is another great way to save money. machine traffic patronizing their business? At the end of the day, we are all trying to provide a trail network to enjoy, while working with limited resources, funds and time. Whatever creativity you can devise to help save cost along the way helps both the local clubs and the VAST organization toward the overall goal of providing a trail network within our budget.
