This meeting took place in mid-October this year and after a few hours of discussion the following list was created which outlines the areas that will be shared and what areas will be closed. As you can see, there are a number of trails closed. The poor winter, or lack thereof, last season also affected the timber harvesting operations. The ground did not freeze in many areas and therefore very little to no timber harvesting was completed. As a result, there are more harvests scheduled for the upcoming winter. The effects on the trail system in and out of Canaan are the most noticeable. However, everyone needs to understand that a couple of the timber harvesting operations are hopefully going to take place during the early season and be done within a short period of time. This could allow the trail to open up We are just a few short weeks away from yet another snowmobile season. Recently there has been a lot of chatter surrounding the temporary trail closures in the Northeast Kingdom. I have seen bits and pieces of posts from various social media sites and a few members have asked me “What is going on in the Northeast Kingdom?” I often times feel that some people simply like drama and will work their hardest to create it if they can. As if there isn’t enough in the world already! I want to put some of the myths to rest and discuss the trail closures a bit and the reasoning behind them. It all makes perfect sense to me and I hope it will to you too once you read this. To give a little background to the situation here, VAST and representatives from local VAST clubs in the Northeast Kingdom meet annually with the State of Vermont Department of Forest, Parks and Recreation; Department of Fish and Wildlife; representatives from the Silvio O. Conte Fish and Wildlife Refuge and the large timberland owners who own thousands of acres in the Northeast Kingdom. The large timberland owners include LandVest and Weyerhaeuser, one of the world’s largest private owners of timber. The main goal of this meeting is to discuss any maintenance or other issues as well as any proposed timber harvesting operations that will affect the snowmobile trails in the area for the upcoming season.
