34 | Snowmobile VERMONT Club News including adults, born after July 1, 1983 and who has reached the age of 12 or older must have passed a snowmobile safety class. Our trailmaster, Reno Gervais, reports that Corridor 58 and 2000 will be receiving some upgrades. There are a couple of trails where we may have to share a portion of plowed roads, but he and his crew of volunteers are still working on some bypasses. Contact Reno at Gervais Hardware if you can volunteer to help with trails this fall. The Brighton Snowmobile Club participated in the Island Pond Fourth of July parade and won second place for the best float. Thanks to all those who helped with the project. Our annual dinner/snowmobile raffle will be held again on Jan. 19 in Island Pond at the Legion Hall. Tickets are on sale now for $150 and will be available at the Welcome Center, or you can call Janet Selby at 802-895-2951. Each ticket includes a dinner for two, a chance to win a Ski-Doo and a great time. Every ticket holder receives a prize donated by one of our area businesses. We hope you enjoy the fall and begin to just think about doing the “snow dance” in late November and early December. Remember, opening day, Dec. 16, will come quicker than you think, and a lot of work needs to be done by volunteers to get our trails ready to go. Canaan Border Riders With fall upon us, the club is busy with preparation for winter. September always starts with our biggest fundraising effort of the year, the co-ed lob pitch softball tourney. We once again had 44 teams from throughout New England for the Labor Day weekend event. As always, it was a great success and helps keep the club solvent for another year. It also helps make the weekend a huge success for all the commerce in the Northeast Kingdom. A huge thank you to all who help make it a success. Without volunteers, we wouldn’t be able to pull this off. September also sees us deep in the construction phase of the snowmobile season. I know it’s hard to believe, but the heavy lifting needed to keep trails open for the coming year starts in the spring, with the grant and aid period, and runs right through September for implementing the projects. Reroutes, new trails, and repairs on the old ones takes place now so that members can enjoy the season ahead. A huge thank you to VAST for all the support they give us with these projects. The month will end with our annual ATV Fall Foliage Poker Run. It is the end of the ATV season and the start of gearing up for snowmobiling. We hope for some great foliage and big crowds as this too helps contribute to our annual fundraising efforts. Hope you join us for what is a very fun day. Until your next issue, remember to join where you ride and that the Northeast Kingdom has been home of the Canaan Border Riders for 52 years running and still going strong! Seems like we waited forever to finally see our breath in the crisp fall air. This also means projects are underway, and our equipment is being assessed for the 2018-19 season. Yes, winter preparations are underway in Polar Bear country! Trailmaster Dana Nason has been overseeing a busy schedule of trail maintenance and construction. Thanks to Dana and all our club volunteers who, for weeks, have been clearing, cutting, drilling, hammering and digging. We expect projects to continue until the snow flies. The half-mile Corridor 2A reroute near EX70 is spectacular. You will enjoy the wide, winding trail that takes you over Kimball Hill. Closer to town, look forward to repairs to the trail base following the logging projects from last winter. A section of the 2F2 secondary trail was improved in Gilman. Also, two bridges were re-decked in the valley. Corridor 102 in Granby has two steep exposures that occasionally lose the base during unfavorable conditions. Planning is underway to add a secondary bypass at each location to sustain riding. Club grooming routes will change following the acceptance of additional mileage from a neighboring club. You will see our PistenBully working further on the powerlines. We are also contemplating some changes to our secondary trails. This includes
