Tweed Valley Travelers - History

Tweed Valley Travelers started out with about 15 or so folks that snowmobiled back in the 60's and early 70's and has since grown to approximately 200 members. In fact, there is a tale of a Mr. Keith Knapp who back in the early 50's may have build his own version of a snow machine and was told of towing his 2 year old daughter along on a trailer! The machine I'm told may be in a museum somewhere but remains unsubstantiated.

The first recorded meeting of the Tweed Valley Travelers was held on November 16, 1972, this first meeting was held at the Colton Guest Farm in Pittsfield. On May 28th, 1976 the Tweed Valley Travelers became incorporated with the Secretary of State in Vermont. The Club is a  non profit organization and consists of all volunteer members.

Several of our members have been involved and continue to contribute to our club for over 30 years. A very select few have contributed for over 50 years and have received several awards including but not limited to a Lifelong VAST membership. Some stories told from our "Old Timers" are of grooming with snowmobiles pulling sections of spruce trees tied to a sled. "Frenchies" I'm told they were called in honor of a Frenchman Mr. Gauthier.

Over the years our club built and maintained over 60 miles of trails. We have since relinquished a small portion of trails to the Barnard and other clubs mainly for logistics. TVT currently maintains 53 miles of trails through the Townships of Pittsfield, Chittenden, Rochester, Stockbridge, Killington and Barnard. Much of our trail system also falls within the USDA forest service and covers land in both Rutland and Windsor Counties. Our trail system is unique in that we provide access to several eateries, places to stay and a fueling service.

Currently we have a wonderful group of over 70 landowners that have granted permission to use their property for the trail system thus allowing continuity and connectivity with the VAST trail system. These properties offer some amazing terrain and spectacular views. We are extremely thankful to our landowner's far and wide for their collective permission. As a small token of our appreciation we sponsor an annual landowners dinner at the end of each season.

We remind everyone to respect these and all areas along the trail system, this is a GIFT not a privilege.

Happy sledding to all!
