What a strange season this has been. We have had early season riding followed by an extended warm-up, then some great snow conditions followed by, you guessed it, another warm-up. We hope people were able to get out and enjoy some of the great riding we did have. The Snowstormers held their 22nd Nicholas Gage Poker Run on Jan. 28. Read more about it and see photos on page 29 in this issue of the magazine. Thanks to all who came out and supported our club and also to Beth Godin, media manager from the VAST office, who took time from her busy schedule to come join us. It is always a pleasure to have the folks from VAST join clubs for their events to share in the friendships that make snowmobiling such a fantastic sport. We had people come by sleds, cars, trucks and even a group who came in an old school bus, the “Cool Bus!” It was great to get out and ride the trails again. A couple of issues that I notice while out riding worry me. The first is the excessive speed and lack of respect for others displayed by a few snowmobilers I meet on the trail. They are the ones who are always in the middle of the trail and cutting the inside of the corners regardless if they are on their side or not. They must be in a hurry to get nowhere. Sadly, we have had fatalities this year, so slow down and enjoy living. The other issue is off-trail riding. The vast majority of the trails in our state are on private lands. Volunteers spend an untold amount of time to get landowner permission and to stake trails on these properties. The area between these stakes is the only legal place we can ride. Some of these landowners are farmers who know that a snowmobile trail will slow grass growth, yet they still allow the trails so that we can enjoy our passion. The least we can do for these great landowners is to stay on the trail. As the season comes to an end, we will be out picking up all our signs and stakes. We will be looking at several projects including replanking and rebuilding some bridges. We will need some help, so give us a call or email so we can add your name to work groups to help us address these projects.
