Summer 2018 | 37 Club News keeping our Facebook page up to date with pictures and news. What started out as an idea for a fundraiser by Vice President Lee Whiting, has evolved into a huge townwide event called “Wheels in the Field” during Columbus Day weekend. Lee is coordinating this, which includes BMW and Porche participation. There will be activities and food around the town of Chester with an Octoberfest theme. Chester Snowmobile Club will be cooking burgers and dogs. Fall foliage will be in full bloom, so plan to be there. Our last meeting of the season was held in May. During that meeting, we voted to award four $600 scholarships to graduating high school students going on to higher their education. As proud supporters of our community, we voted to make charitable contributions to several local organizations, including the Chester Rescue Squad, Yosemite Engine Company and the Chester Andover Summer Camp program. After our meeting, the club held their end of season barbecue where over 30 folks enjoyed kabobs, salads, stuffed burgers, fruit cups and more. It was great to wrap up the season with so many friends sharing stories and great food. Again this year, we want to extend our heartfelt appreciation to all the landowners who graciously allow us to have a portion of our trail on their property. Have an awesome summer. This is our first ever post in Snowmobile Vermont magazine and hope to post on a regular basis. We even posted on the VAST website so you can now follow us there or on our Facebook page: facebook.com/ littleascutneysnowmobileclub. We elected new officers and they are: President Mike Coleman, Vice President Jeff Gilcris, Treasurer Janet Allen, Secretary Kevin Barnes and Trailmaster Wayne Geise. We have big shoes to fill, Dennis did it all. Wayne and Janet groomed over 374 miles in a 10-year-old Kawasaki Mule, having to walk out of the woods only three times due to break downs. Wayne and Dan Hadwin repaired the Mule just in time for March’s snow. Mike and Sam towed the Mule out of the woods, trailered it and then dragged it back to Wayne’s, where Wayne and Shawn Delaney replaced the water pump. We had a very successful club social. Old man Gilly’s homemade chicken soup kept us all warm. Thanks to H.B. Fuels and Alex Gibb for getting the porta-potty. Janet picked up a few bales of hay to sit on around a bonfire. Mike Barrup trucked over a load of firewood that burned all day. This spring, we had the opportunity to meet with Rick White, Scott Jensen and Lee from Vermont ANR to aid with helping us with improving several bad spots in the trail tread that are in need of repair. Their experience and suggestions will help us make permanent improvements to the trail tread. The club plans to upgrade two intersections with new VAST standard signs and posts. We will also be building four new bridges over bad spots and debrushing a few miles of trail. We were just granted approval from the state to improve five sites just north of South Reading on VAST Corridor 106. We hope to have everything finished by Oct. 1.
