28 | Snowmobile VERMONT ESSEX COUNTY Club News that allow this club and VAST to put this trail system on your land. Without these landowners, this trail system would not be available. Please respect these lands so we will be able to use them next year. This club has a great core of volunteers who get together when needed and make things happen. Thank you to all of our volunteers and to our members. The VAST Annual Meeting is coming up. Please make time to get involved at the club level in your area. We hope to see you at the annual meeting. Have a safe and happy summer. Steve Leedy, President newarkezriders.com Like us on Facebook Members Shelley and Tom D’Amato (Tom not pictured) took down some signs this spring for the Brighton Snowmobile Club. Brighton Snowmobile Club As I sit here with temperatures in the seventies, I still have fond memories of a late spring snowfall which gave us some good March and April riding this year in the Northeast Kingdom. With the untimely death this past winter of our trailmaster, Dave Page, the Brighton Snowmobile Club has seen some restructuring. Bob Dexter has agreed to be our new president once again after taking a few years off from that position. We would like to thank past president, Richard Fortin, for his time and expertise these past few years for serving in that capacity. Our other officers remain the same: Vice President Chris Roese, Secretary Sue Pedersen, and Treasurer Sue Purdell. Reno Gervais has agreed to become our new trailmaster with some of the volunteers taking on some of the other duties that Dave once covered. Reno will need a lot of help, especially with two bridge projects on the to-do list this summer and fall. Please give him a call or stop in at Gervais Hardware to let him know if you can spare some time to help out. You can also check out our Facebook page to find out about our work weekends. Another change that has taken place is the membership chair. Marilyn Maxwell will be taking over for Janet Selby in that position. Marilyn has been a volunteer for many years at the Welcome Center for our club and Island Pond. Janet will still be helping out to make it a smooth transition in the fall and will also work at the Center on occasion during the winter. She would like to thank all the volunteers who worked with her and plans to do a lot more snowmobiling than in the past! Recently, Mark Ellingwood did a grooming analysis for our members. Some very interesting facts came to light. Did you know that our club groomed 6,564.5 miles, which is the equivalent of a round trip from IP to Los Angeles and then to Detroit? We also groomed 1,229.1 hours which is equal to 30.7 40-hour work weeks. That’s a lot of late nights for our great groomer operators, but some wonderful riding! We hope you all enjoy the summer and will give some serious thought to helping us out by volunteering some of your time to the club. Yet planning meetings are definitely underway across the state. Equipment is being serviced and VAST bridges are being repaired. As I write this report, an entire county fleet of grooming equipment is on display up north. Yes, it’s a great day to be in Polar Bear Country! Our signs, stakes and three groomers are safely tucked away for the long summer’s nap. But we are already thinking of a snowy winter to come. Last year, our huge Corridor 1 bridge project and trail reroute received rave reviews. For next season, we are hopeful that pending improvements closer to town will yield similar results. The Polar Bears will iron out priorities at a summer trails meeting. The club is awaiting approval of a much needed reroute of Corridor 2A near Kimball Road. For years, a half-mile stretch of plowed trail, eroded base and a hairpin turn was historically called the “Ice Gauntlet.” Courtesy of supportive landowners, a reroute has been mapped out that will bypass this area. We hope it will also offer gorgeous views of the Kilkenny Mountains and Presidential Range. Similarly on 2A near the Lunenburg Town Common, various improvements are planned following completion of a logging project. This should remove some tight and twisty curves. Two bridge repairs are planned for Corridor 2F1. Club business meetings will be underway in September. Keep in touch with our Facebook page, club website and email. We certainly flew right through spring here in Norton. As I write this, we are under six months to “Go-Time” already. However, we will enjoy all that the summer months have
