22 | Vermont Association of Snow Travelers Orleans County County Director Roger Gosselin Clubs - Orleans County Located in the heart of the Northeast Kingdom and nestled between two mountain ranges, Orleans county has a diverse amount of terrain for any age visitor. Newport, the only city in the Northeast Kingdom, is found at the Southern end of the international waters of Lake Memphremagog. Lakes that are scattered throughout the county are sure to please any outdoor enthusiast. Vermont’s second largest lake, Lake Seymour, is only a few minutes drive from Newport. Vermont’s deepest lake, Lake Willoughby, is tucked in the Southeast corner. Jay Peak towers over the county at nearly 4,000 feet and can be seen from almost every corner. The Green Mountains form the backbone of the county and the Long Trail follows the mountaintops all the way north to the Canadian border. Traveling from east to west in the county, snowmobilers start in the high terrain of Holland, Morgan, Charleston, and Westmore. When entering the Derby and Newport area, there are a variety of local choices to dine, shop and sleep. Dropping into the Missisquoi Valley towns of Troy, Jay and Westfield, snowmobilers are presented with flat, fast trails, combined with majestic views of the Green Mountains to the west. Corridor 242 runs parallel to the Long Trail on the eastern side of the mountains. Reaching altitudes over 2,100 feet, the ride and views are unforgettable. Corridor 242 connects to Corridor 105 which is a cross-state trail that runs over Hazen’s Notch and drops into the Village of Montgomery. Corridor 120 also provides plenty of photo opportunities over Richford Mountain. The southern end of the county provides access to one of the longest rail trails in New England, the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail, a 90-mile trail that runs from St. Johnsbury to Swanton. Whether it is flats, hills, mountains, open, or wooded, Orleans county provides trail types for all riders, giving them a desolate feel, while keeping them in close proximity to food, gas and lodging.
