38 | Snowmobile VERMONT Club News WASHINGTON COUNTY to see. There’s the “giant tree” on Secondary Trail 30A in Hydeville. In Hubbardton, there is the parkway, which is a divided, one-way trail with a side loop to Devil’s Cliff. Devil’s Cliff offers views of Lake Bomoseen and the Adirondacks, including White Face Ski Area. Grandpa’s Knob radio tower on Hubbardton Mountian (Corridor 4C) has views of the Rutland valley, Glenns Falls and West Mountian Ski Area. Our trails surround Lake Bomoseen, which is Vermont’s largest in-state lake. We also have four restaurants and three fuel stops with trail access. We may be small, but our volunteers are dedicated and we groom our trails. When there is snow, come visit Bomoseen! Tim Park, County Trails Coordinator Shrewsbury Sno-Bird Ed Raymond was one of many club volunteers who assisted with removing downed trees on the trail system before opening day. Shrewsbury Sno-Birds The moon is out, the trees are white and the temps are around zero degrees, so we must be in Vermont in January, hoping for a great snowmobile season! We started the season off really well. It was one of the best for first time grooming, in terms of snow depth. Then the snow in the lower elevations melted. In those areas, we are starting from scratch. Just this week we received about one foot of snow. We will be out there getting things filled in again, and, hopefully, they will stay filled in for the rest of the season. I want to thank Barry Alger, Ed Raymond, Mark Quesnel, Mike Stewart, Scott Ballard, Dave Fucci, and Gary Arthur for all their hard work getting the trees cut and trails open for opening day of the 2018/19 VAST snowmobile season after the big storm in December. It took six days of two- man crews to get it done. Some got cold and wet, and we all were tired. But we do it for the sport we enjoy and to make it nice for others as do all the other volunteers in the VAST organization! We had a safety course in December with five children attending and one adult. The adult did not take the test. The children all passed! The children are the future of VAST and we hope as they grow, they will be the new volunteers to keep VAST growing. Thank you to Dave Blecich and crew for that yearly event. I mentioned last month we were brainstorming a fundraiser. We ended up having a successful raffle. Scott Ryan had the idea of raffling off a $500 gift certificate from John Craigin’s Gun Shop. The winner was Dana Hart. Thank you to all who purchased tickets and to John for helping with this fundraiser. We will be doing another one in the spring. Our meetings are the second Tuesday of every month at the Southside Steakhouse on South Main Street in Rutland. I cannot stress enough to help your club. Many hands make light work for everyone! We hope to see you out enjoying our trails. Remember to respect the landowners and ride safely and ride right! Roy Arthur, Vice President & Trailmaster shrewsburysnobirds.org Like us on Facebook Green Mountain Roamers It appears that winter is finally here! With over 14 inches falling in the last two days and a clipper four days ago that dropped a few inches, the Green Mountain Roamers are ready to ride. Our groomer was out yesterday rolling the trails and we are looking forward to a great weekend of riding. The suspension bridge got the final okay and the trail that leads from Waterbury to Ridge Runner territory is good to go. By the time this article is printed, the annual raffle will be over and the winner announced, but as of last night’s meeting we are in full raffle swing. With a couple tickets still left to sell and a few details to polish off, the countdown has begun. We are looking forward to getting together with the riders in the area and having some fun to kick off what we hope is going to be a great season. Thank you to the landowners who generously allow us to utilize their land for this great sport! Think snow!
