16 | Vermont Association of Snow Travelers Chittenden county has approximately 110 miles of trails comprised of 60 percent open farm fields and 40 percent wooded. There are several spectacular views and beautiful spots in the county. The top of Mt. Philo is a destination for many weekend riders. Here is a beautiful scenic ride you can take to Mt. Philo. Begin the ride at the parking lot on Route 125 in Essex Center. This is Saxon Hill Riders’ territory. Out of the Parking lot, head south on Corridor 7. If you need gas, it is a short ride to the Simons Mobil on Route 15 in Essex. Corridor 7 crosses Route 15 at the store. Continue south on Corridor 7 to the VT 117 road crossing. This is a tricky crossing. There is normally heavy traffic at commute times. Shortly after crossing Route 117 the trail crosses the Winooski River on the North Williston Rd. bridge. This is an approved crossing, but again traffic can be a concern. The bridge is about 200 yards long. You will exit the road to the left after crossing the bridge. You are now on Williston Hill Hawks trails. Continue south on Corridor 7. Several miles south you will cross Route 2 and then ride under Interstate 89 in a cattle underpass. There is plenty of room. We drive the Tucker through. Caution: if we have had any recent thaws, there may be water or ice in the underpass. Continuing south, you will climb French hill. Then after paralleling the interstate for a bit, turn south and pass through farming fields, horse pastures and even some shared multiuse trails on 5 Tree Town property. Please respect the other trail users. You will continue south past CN 8 and CN 8, heading to CN 11. At CN 11, turn left staying on Corridor 7. You have now entered SCAT Club trails. Continue south to CN 12 and then to CN 1. Yes, you are still on Corridor 7. From CN 1, following Corridor 7 south will bring you to AN 19 and Mt. Philo State Park. The trail enters the park on the east side of the mountain from private property. Again, this is public property and you will encounter many other trail users. Please be respectful. At AN 19, take a left and travel .4 miles to the top of Mt. Philo, and some of the best views in the Champlain Valley.
