There are no exceptions (a driver’s license does not exempt a person from taking the course) and you must carry proof of your certification while operating. Once issued, the certification is good for life and can be replaced if lost or destroyed. Vermont has had a snowmobile safety course since the 1970s. It wasn’t until May of 1999 that the snowmobile safety course became mandatory for persons born after July 1, 1983. The course has gone through many changes over the years. Currently, the course has a classroom as well as an internet version. It is strongly encouraged for persons requiring the certification to take the classroom version of the course. However, the internet version is available for those individuals unable to attend a classroom course for reasons of scheduling and/or location. The Snowmobile Vermont classroom snowmobile safety course is a six hour course which includes a final exam. The Snowmobile Vermont internet snowmobile course is a “managed” course which can be completed at the student’s leisure. The time it takes to complete the course is based on the student’s successful completion of each chapter, quiz and final exam. Upon successful completion, the student can print a temporary certification until the permanent certificate is processed and mailed to the student.
