b'VAST NewsGRAFTONS SUSPENSION BRIDGE GETS A FACELIFTBy George Berube These photos are of a 120-foot suspension bridge located in Grafton on Corridor 5, just a couple miles north of junction WM62. Heavy rains brought a large tree down river causing major damage that would have closed the bridge this year. Thanks to volunteers Dave Mack, Al Bouchard, Pete Bruno, George Berube, Jeff Lawlor and Kiernon Galandak of the Grafton Outing Club, it has been repaired just in time for the opening of this season. This suspension bridge was built in the early 70s by the Abenaqui Snowmobilers Club. It was one of two suspension bridges built and maintained by the Abenaqui Snowmobilers Club, which recently merged with the Grafton Outing Club in 2019. The Abenaqui Snowmobilers Club had been in existence for 50 years. The Hurricane Irene flood in August 2011 destroyed the other suspension bridge in Saxtons River, snapping its poles, dragging the cables and its weights down river. Sadly, this bridge was never rebuilt after that. The Grafton suspension bridge also sustained major damage during the hurricane, but the cables stayed in place. Club volunteers quickly rebuilt the bridge that year, also just in time for the opening of the 2012 snowmobile season.6 | Snowmobile VERMONT'
