Approximate Distance: 80 miles Loop 6: Covered Bridges of Lamoille County
This loop features three covered bridges in Cambridge Junction, Belvidere, and Johnson, and offers a fantastic combination of high elevation riding and traversing large rolling fields.
Apparently, this was a photo op that some members of our group couldn’t resist. Dick Carpenter, Dale Allen, Lamoille County Trails Coordinator and I working on getting unstuck.
After writing about the need to get out on the trails this season, I finally took my advice and have been on a few fantastic loops including this one in Lamoille County. Two feet of fresh powder and an ambitious group of fun characters from the county, we made tracks after Mother Nature blessed us with snow. My friends out west have told me that you aren’t snowmobiling unless you’re stuck. Obviously, their mantra is a little different than ours, however if you were one of the lucky ones to get out on the trails after this last snowstorm, kudos to you. There’s something to be said about powder flying up over the cowling and those ‘stuck moments’ where your buddies are scrambling to capture the moment on film.
Dick Carpenter (2006 VAST Groomer of the Year) leads our group through this section of the Covered Bridge Loop. Last winter, the Smuggler’s Notch Snowmobile Club obtained permission from the Select Board to use this bridge to cross the Lamoille River. The club had to install additional planking over the original deck and ensure that the bridge remain in its original state.
A lunch stop at the Cupboard Deli in Jeffersonville is a must to sample the local flavor and top it with an endless variety of homemade sweet yummy’s. From winding through dense forestland on Sterling Mountain to ascending the steep terrain on Laraway Mountain to cruising on the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail, this is terrific way to spend your day on the trails.
